On 6th (Friday) Feb,2009 In Hubli at BVB Engeeniering college campus The former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam urged entrepreneurs and like-minded people to take up initiatives that led to development of infrastructure in a cluster of at least 50 villages around Hubli under the concept of “Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA)”.
He was speaking after inaugurating Dr. R.H. Kulkarni Memorial Lecture Hall Complex and Deshpande Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at B.V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology here.
Referring to his “Vision 2020”, Dr. Kalam said: “All of us have before us a mission of transforming India into a developed nation. The five key areas where India has a core competence for integrated action are agriculture and food processing, education and healthcare, infrastructure, reliable and quality electricity supply, surface transport and infrastructure for all parts of the country, information and communication technology and self-reliance in critical technologies.”
Dr. Kalam said these five areas were inter-related and if they progressed in a coordinated way, it would lead to food, economic and national security. “Of the five areas, the major one is development of infrastructure in rural areas through Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas. The number of PURA clusters for the country has been estimated at 7,000,” Dr. Kalam said.
The former President hoped that BVB College would take the initiative of forming a “PURA” complex near Hubli.
Dr. Kalam said: “From energy and environmental considerations, we should aim at achieving energy independence by 2030. Energy independence has to be achieved through renewable energy (solar, wind and hydel), nuclear energy and bio-fuel for transport sector. Energy independence throws important technological challenges to the country.”
The former President said that creative leadership was essential for economic development and hoped that colleges would create an atmosphere conducive to produce leaders from among the students.
Dr. Kalam referred to the success of “Chandrayaan” of ISRO and elaborated on the hard work behind it.
Dr. Kalam felicitated N.R Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murthy of Infosys, and Gururaj Deshpande and Jaishree Deshpande for their donation to construct the two buildings that were inaugurated on the occasion.
Chairman of KLE Society Prabhakar Kore welcomed the gathering.
Principal of the college Ashok Shettar proposed a vote of thanks.
